Collaborating with authors, influencers, and media personnel can be a powerful way to expand your reach and promote your books. By exposing your book to new audiences, you’ll boost visibility for your upcoming releases while growing your fanbase.
First, you’ll need to do some research on potential collaborators. Search on Google, social media, trending hashtags, podcasts, and media outlets for relevant influencers, journalists, authors, and brands that are open to collaboration. For example, if you write nonfiction books on runners’ health, try locating book reviewers or experts who specialize in that genre. If they are open to collaboration with authors, they’ll usually have contact information readily listed on their website or profile. If you’re reaching out to someone on social media, a simple DM might suffice.
When reaching out, make sure to suggest specific types of collaboration that will benefit both you and your collaborator. Here are some examples of effective cross-promotion options:
1. Co-Hosted Events
Whether virtual or in person, co-hosting events with influencers or other authors can help you attract a wider audience. You can organize joint book launches, author panels, or Q&A sessions, allowing both of your fanbases to learn about each other’s work.
2. Write Blurbs and Reviews
Offering to write a blurb or review for another author’s book in exchange for a review of your own is a simple but effective way to cross-promote. Then, feature each other’s blurbs on your book covers or in social media posts. Make sure to always link or tag the other author to maximize cross-traffic between your respective followers. 3. Share Newsletters
If you have a newsletter audience, consider collaborating with another author to cross-promote each other’s books. Include a brief feature or book recommendation in your email blasts, encouraging your subscribers to check out the other author’s work. Then, have them do the same for you.
4. Collaborate on Social Media
Team up on social media by sharing each other’s posts, doing joint Instagram Lives, or hosting Twitter Q&A sessions together. Another fun idea is doing an “Instagram takeover,” where you swap login info and post about your book on each other’s accounts for the day. It’s a great way to engage directly with new potential followers and readers, giving them a reason to check out your books. Make sure to only do takeovers with someone you trust! 5. Join or Create an Author Collective
Consider joining an author collective or forming one with a group of authors in your genre. Collectives can organize joint marketing efforts, such as running group ads, creating anthologies, or hosting multi-author giveaways. You can easily find author collectives on Facebook Groups, genre-specific websites, and other social media platforms.
